Adding seat height does make a difference -- you lose a bit of initial stability but edging is facilitated. I think this is particularly true if you have a relatively high deck that might limit your flexibility. I'm not sure I would use a folded-up towel, since it will get soggy pretty quickly. A small therma-rest pad is ideal for that sort of experimentation, but anything (including the towel) that can be temporarily fixed in place will do. It's definitely worth a try. If you like the effect, then probably the best permanent solution would be to use foam to augment the current seat.
