subject: [Paddlewise] Interesting misinterpretation of a roll

My club is in the middle of pool sessions and someone contacted me
about a sweep roll technique. He said he learned it from an ACA
instructor and it is basically Dutky's sweep roll. However, it is
a misinterpretation.

Figure 5.1 D (my copy of the first edition) shows a paddler with
a relaxed position at the final recovery of a sweep roll (what
I'd call a screw roll i.e. normal hand position on paddle).
The paddler is looking at the sweeping blade and the arm is
slightly bent.

The ACA instructor and the person who contacted me seem to have
interpreted this drawing as meaning that one finishes the roll
with a serious twist to the torso, with the elbow on the rear
deck and the head looking back! I suppose that the drawing
could be a tad misleading, but the text does not support such
an interpretation.

Has anyone else come across someone doing or teaching a roll
like this?

Mike
