My wife did it: http://www.grindol.com/JGstand2.jpg She's desperately looking forward to paddling again this year after two years off the water. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome sucks (from keybord/mouse). CT seems to be less problematic for paddling a canoe. It is easier to limit the motion of one or the other hands. 2. She has probably been doing lots of things to reduce the problem, but one she may not have thought of is to switch the mouse to the left hand (assuming she has more problem with the right, which seems common for computer users). I did that years ago and it helped my then-ailing right hand a lot, and improved my office productivity by a significant margin. It also helped keep people away from my computer. After about a month I was almost as good on the mouse with my left hand as with my dominant right. But it meant I had my good hand for the number pad, or other keys, or taking written notes, all while talking on the phone and mousing to find what I needed. Speaking of carpal tunnel, my wife is currently recovering from this ugly little affliction (drug therapy only, she managed to avoid the surgery). Right now she can't paddle at all but I was wondering if people who use the bent shaft paddles and have had carpal tunnel really found them to be effective. I'm trying to decide whether or not to cough up the dough for an AT bent shaft carbon paddle for her for her birthday (May 17, which would work well for her recovery time and for when the water gets warmer). The worst thing about all of this is that we're not sure we'll be able to continue our BCU training with GRO this year. Did the one day class and two day workshop last year. Wanted to do the 3 star training and assesment then the intermediate workshop this year. Any time I mention possibly just going without her gets me in trouble. :( <sigh> Oh well, maybe I can use this year to save up for a Romany Explorer. :) BTW, she got carpal tunnel from the computer. She really preaches the virtues of ergonomic keyboards, workstations, and trackballs now. You can reply to the list, me or her (Julie) ( grindolj_at_lindahall.org ). Can't help you on that question, but I found myself developing carpal tunnel in my right wrist, only. A switch to a left feather managed to reverse the worst of the problems -- but you get some wierd looks paddling with a left feather, some times. -- Wes *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
Can't say if this practice actually helps me avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, but it does help me avoid discomfort: the mouse on my home computer is on the left, while the mouse on my work computer is on the right. Anybody want to coin a new "ambi_____terous" term? I tis much easier to learn if you reverse the mouse buttons, so that the index finger still does index finger stuff on the mouse.
