subject: [Paddlewise] Kayak Trailers? Change Your Loading Technique

Rod, I agree with a response Jennifer sent you. I think you can solve your
problem with a different loading technique. You did not say if you are able
to carry your boat by yourself, but if you are able you can just walk your
boat toward the rear of your vehicle and set the bow on the edge of the roof,
and set the stern down on the ground. Then walk to the stern, pick it up, and
push the boat onto the racks. This is the technique I use, and it is not
difficult. I put a towel on the edge of the roof to prevent scratching, and I
put a piece of carpet on the ground to rest the stern on, but this probably
isn't necessary. I have Yakima rollers at the rear of my Explorer, which are
mounted very close to the back of the car. Another way to do the same thing
is to set the kayak on the ground right next to the rear of your vehicle,
with the rear half of the boat extended behind the vehicle. Pick up the bow
only and set it on the edge of the roof, keeping your hands on the boat, walk
to the stern which is on the ground, pick it up, and push the boat onto the
racks.
