Hello All, I have a question regarding cold water/weather clothing and here it is: If I were wearing a farmer john style wetsuit, water proof socks, mid calf booties with a good outer sole, and a paddling or splash top, gloves, etc., would it be appropriate to wear a "core layer" garment under the farmer john or over it? I am trying to decide on acceptable late spring gear for the purposes of taking the training I want and starting earlier than June or July!! Advice always welcomed, Rob Castle *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s). Assuming water is cold enough (lets say 55F or 10C), you may try a synthetic fleece jacket or pullover of medium weight (Polartec 200, for ex) over a Farmer John. You might not be able to squeeze much insulation between FJ and your body. I paddle in the Falkland Islands with a water temp of about 4C. I wear a 3mm full wetsuit with a fleece over the top. I also wear a water/wind proof cag over that. I nevr wear waterproof trousers but wear thick neoprene socks and old trainers (I find the shoes uncomfortable!). On very cold days I wear Pogies or neoprene gloves. I stay quite warm. If the conditions are rough I also wear my neoprene 'gimp' hood (very attractive!!!) I am a rather well built paddler and couldn't squezze a tissue paper between me and my wetsuit!!! Hope that helps Steve Dent > I have a question regarding cold water/weather clothing and here it is: > If I were wearing a farmer john style wetsuit, water proof socks, mid calf > booties with a good outer sole, and a paddling or splash top, gloves, etc., > would it be appropriate to wear a "core layer" garment under the farmer john > or over it? My opinion: Under it. The under garment helps close the gap between you and the Farmer John, slowing the exchange of water with the outside. Because this garment traps water, it provides additional insulation in the form of a still water barrier. This is because water can only come from the "edges". If you put the garment on the outside, you expose the whole porous surface to water exchange, and will likely see only negligible benefit. I rarely use farmer Johns anymore, but when I do, I put porous layers underneath, and water/windproof layers on the outside. I used a dry top over farmer johns last summer up in Washington and a deliberate swim revealed that it was adequate protection for short term immersion. My wife, who cools much faster than me, did the same and also found it adequate (but not comfortable) Steve Brown -----Original Message----- Hello All, I have a question.......would it be appropriate to wear a "core layer" garment under the farmer john or over it? .........
