When my friend and I both had motorcycles (speaking of death
wishes...teenagers on motorcycles is about a potent mix as you can devise!)
his Dad, an avid motorcycle rider, sat us down and told us in no uncertain
terms - "if you ever get on your bike and you aren't the least bit scared,
then get off and hang up the keys until you are". His point wasn't to ride
nervously or scared - but to give the activity its due respect - a respect
that would encourage you to ride defensively. When you ride nonchalantly
you are a danger to yourself. I obviously haven't forgotten his talk with
us - and I think it applies to paddling too.

The other night I was at a party and ran into a fellow I know from early
days back in a local paddling club. He is an owner of a first generation
K-Light that he took to a tributary of the Orinoco.

He is also a motorcyclist who regularly carries his K-Light on the back of
his machine and a Razor collapsible scooter over one shoulder with its
shoulder strap. Why that combination? First, he cycles to a place a few
blocks away from the Downtown Boathouse in Manhattan where he launches from.
Then he puts the bagged K-Light up against the scooter's post and bungees it
to it. He has just enough room on the scooter's footboard to put one foot
with the rest holding the K-Light. He then foot scooters the blocks to the
put-in.

I am quite anxious to get some photos of him in these various configurations
of motorcycle and scooter. On par with the old photos of Kleppers on camels
when 1920s German folding kayak adventurers were circling the globe with
their boats.
