Hello Josh,
         Lendal's newer paddles don't require the rim rubber.  They used to
delaminate, but the current carbon blade does not.  I've been using a carbon
Nordkapp fairly roughly for two (or is it three?) years now with no
delamination.  I installed the rim rubber - not a difficult job - when the
paddle was new, but removed it during its first season when someone I
trusted told me it was not necessary for this paddle.
          As for the feel of the paddle in the water -- I can't say it made
much difference one way or the other.
