Hello Josh, Lendal's newer paddles don't require the rim rubber. They used to delaminate, but the current carbon blade does not. I've been using a carbon Nordkapp fairly roughly for two (or is it three?) years now with no delamination. I installed the rim rubber - not a difficult job - when the paddle was new, but removed it during its first season when someone I trusted told me it was not necessary for this paddle. As for the feel of the paddle in the water -- I can't say it made much difference one way or the other.
