A harpoon with an explosive tip would be even more effective. Then, you get a "kill" no matter what part of the beast you hit. -- I've read some very interesting report in a yachting magazine last year. Those big guys on yachts have tried small self-guided missile (bought cheap in a local military surplus store); first attempt was a success. Second one failed because a crew member began celebrating too soon after launch, and has lit his cigarette; it was a heat-guided missile, you know :-)... Man can't go wrong with a harpoon.
