[Paddlewise] Quirks and phobias

My quirk/phobia is deep water, which is anything I can't stand up in :-)

Most of my paddling has been coastal and deep lake, and most of it solo, so
its a bit ironic, but I always get a twinge of fear when I pause to realize
I'm venturing out into deep water. Just to piss myself off I used to paddle
out into the middle of Lake Winnepasaukee and wet exit, re-enter and do it
again and again in different ways (at some point a well meaning power boater
would come over to "rescue" me and let me know they had called the Marine
patrol about my predicament). If I was out with a friend we'd practice
rescues, and I would explain why I wanted to do them out in the middle of the
lake. Despite all of this confidence building practice, I still get that
spasm of fear :-) With ocean paddling I also occasionally get a bit
pre-occupied with "something is going to eat me" perseverations. Worse in
deep water:-)

Some day, when I grow up (I've been paddling for 3 years now), I will learn a
roll, and add that to my mid-lake/sound rituals!
