Doug, I enjoyed your story :-) It interesting to note that I don't have this fear, except when in my kayak and alone. It visits only for a moment and is usually gone, but it strikes deep (no pun intended). As a former Naval Surface Warfare Officer, I had no difficulty on the ship, or in the motor whaleboat, out in the middle of the deep, dark night of the Atlantic. I have never quite figured it out. I suspect that it reminds me of my limits, that the sea is much mighter than I, and that I lose respect for it at my own peril. Perhaps like a fool, I feel braver in the company of others (more paddlers means more options, not necessarily more safety). I came to paddling later in life (are my late 30's later in life?), and having cruised the oceans of the world, in calm, in storm, in the darkest of night, I already knew it could kill me without even noticing. That it hasn't is why I love it so much...
