Greetings paddlers,
I have a question to those who may have paddled in British Columbia's Gulf
Islands.
I am planning on doing a 6 day trip in the Mayne and Saturna Island area. I
read somewhere that the tide floods and ebbs in a southerly direction
through Tumbo Channel - adjacent to Cabbage Island and Tumbo Island.
Evidently it is an anomolie that occurs there. Is this true?
Does anybody have an experience with this?

I am also open to suggestions for the trip.
:-)
Thanks,
Jim Meldrum

Yup, that's true, regardless of the tide the current always flows to the
south through Tumbo Channel. The current isn't really a problem there, stick
to the shores and work the eddies if you are heading north. Watch out for
currents at both ends of Saturna though. To the north there is small channel
called Boat Passage, it's only about 50 feet wide and the current really
rips through there. Also watch out for East Point at the south end of
Saturna, the reef there isn't called Boil Reef for nothing. Both these areas
are best paddled during slack tide.

Cabbage Island is an awesome place. Great camping and lot's of wildlife.
There's an eagles nest on the island. Watch out for the raccoons, they are
very tame and are accomplished thieves. Some of my friends had an otter
spend the weekend in the vestibule of their tent last year. Orcas are also
common in the area.

Great pub at Lyall Harbour near the ferry dock. For more info check out

if you have any questions.
