Actually the embarrassment only comes if you have too much pride, dump your
pride and everyone, including yourself can have more fun.

Since I find myself in potentially embarrassing situation routinely, I
simply stopped worrying about it.

My strategy has been to kind of make a joke out the situation by saying
something so obviously a cover everyone laughs.

If it were me, I would have exaggerated the motion of the roll-up, and then
yelled "Hah!" (as if you were trying to do that on purpose), then hump and
scoot the kayak back toward the water as if you are riding some kind of seal
on the beach.  If anyone was close enough to talk to you I would have added
with a grin "I bet you thought I did that by accident, but actually it takes
great skill to pull that maneuver, and I have been practicing that for
weeks"
