Vasoline, being a petroleum product, can cause an O-ring to degrade rather quickly. You'd have to make sure the O-ring is resistant to petroleum products. There are silicone and nitrile O-rings, but I rather doubt you'd find them in a watch. It's easier and better to use a silicone grease designed for the job.
