I got to check out the CR bar area in late December, 2002. Outside swells were at 20-30', and outside the 'A' Jetty on the north side were still breaking 15' high. (The swell was largely dampened by the outer jetties, but a strong onshore wind had just enough fetch behind the North Jetty to give the A Jetty a serious pounding). We had a great time surfing the refracted swells behind A Jetty, and 2 of our party decided to transit A Jetty and cross to a landing at Waikiki Beach. I was half considering joining them, when I got a big charley horse in my right elbow. I was well-hydrated and well warmed up, but I think it was fear's way of saying, "you would do well to paddle back to Ilwaco!". And the maniacal grin and wide eyed look from Steve Scherrer saying an emphatic "no way"! I think fear of having to land at the _other_ Waikiki also kept me back! Yup, I turned into a big simpering puppy! :) Tim and Ginni landed at Waikiki without mishap about the same time Steve and I made it back to Ilwaco. The same day, a trawler sank outside Florence, OR in the 30' swells. I seldom make choices that I'll later regret. I always have fond memories of paddling in high winds, calm but pouring rain, downy snowflakes...times when it would be easy to say, "no way" and stay home. While a little envious of the other two, I still don't much regret not going for it...it's good to feel later that you don't need to second-guess your decision.
