I canoed Isle Royal when I was 14, so it can indeed be done by the less than expert *if* you stay away from the rocky East coast and other hazardous areas. We paddled mostly inland, though we did spend some time around the Northern islands, and camped a couple of days on Belle Isle. A lovely place, too. (I hope to kayak around there this summer.) From Rock Harbor it's a short portage over the Ridge to the Islands.
