Emile, I feel as if tying down the bow and stern to the car body/frame takes a load off of the roof rack when you encounter wind gusts. If you tie the boat(s) down to the rack, there is a chance the whole rack could break away from the car with the kayak(s) on it. I speak from expierience ...., a very costly one! Ron, Did you actually have the whole rack break loose - or just the crossbars? When car shopping 10 yrs ago I called the service dept. to check up on the salesman's claims re the factory roof rails. The Srvc Mgr told me that I could indeed put a canoe on, but that he wouldn't because of the wind. They had had a car (wagon) in a couple of years earlier where the wind had gotten under the canoe and pulled the roof rails out of the roof "Just like zippers." The repair included a new roof for the car. $$$$ GaryJ -- Director, Family Canoeing Centre Recreational canoeing courses for the whole family. +--------------------------------+ | /"\ | | \ / | | X ASCII RIBBON CAMPAIGN | | / \ AGAINST HTML MAIL & NEWS | +--------------------------------+ *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
