Subject: [Paddlewise] Car topping -- bow/stern tie-down

So here's my question:
"Where the heck do you tie your bow and stern down to on newer vehicles
(say vehicles manufactured in the last 4 or 5 years)?"<<<<

I can't speak about many other cars, but at least a fair number have tie
down hooks on all four corners. For example, my Subura Outback does. But
I also have an older car with a metal bumper (instead of the plastic
covered bumbers that are popular now) that doesn't have any tie down hooks,
so I just drilled holes in the corners of the bumpers and inserted 3/16"
eyebolts (ie hooks that form a complete circle sorta like the letter "P").
I figure when it's time to sell it, I'll just remove the hooks (hoping that
the remaining holes shouldn't be too much of an eyesore).

Washington state, from a kayaking perspective, is its proximity to gorgeous
Vancouver Island as well as the west coast of mainland British Columbia)

I have a tiny 98 Escort and it has tie down attachments on all four sides.
I don't use a roof rack, I only use the foam blocks that come with simple
roof kits. I also run a line through the back windows and over the top of
the kayak. I transport a 17' Perception Eclipse using this method every
other weekend 300 miles each way and never had a problem. Well, I'll have
to say I do feel a bit silly with a kayak 2 times longer than my car but oh
well :)
