After a slide show he did on "Southern Exposure" at Barnes & Noble, I asked Chris Duff Doug's question about how he thought he would get along as part of a trio after having always been in exclusive control on all his past big trips. He was looking forward to it as a change and maybe also as another challenge. I think I said something like: you can always each write your own book about the experience from your own perspective like in "Kabloona in the Yellow Kayak" and "Paddle to the Arctic". For me, often times the human dynamics in the situation liven up what otherwise might have been another dry recitation from the paddler's diary about how many miles one knocked off that day and what they ate for every meal. I've waded slowly through a couple of paddling books like that before. Chris seems pretty easy going and considerate (at least in his social personality). I think he could get along with most anyone if necessary. Of course, I used to think that about myself. That is, before experiencing a "test of my cooperative abilities" for three weeks paddling one of three double folding kayaks in the Queen Charlottes with some, shall we say, "interesting" personalities. I became a lot more careful about the kayaks and people I paddled with, especially on longer trips, after that experience. I'd love to write a brutally honest, tell-all, Paul Theroux style narrative of that trip but, for many reasons, I probably won't. Speaking of getting along, I'd sure appreciate it if we would quit feeding the political and religious "trolls" happening on this list again lately. If you want to wear your politics or religion on your sleeve please go to the appropriate discussion groups to do it. If you want to fight about anything other than paddling related topics with someone else on this list, take it back channel. Perhaps the moderator should institute a three strikes policy for those who start these off topic rants. If you don't like what someone has written off topic write them, and/or the moderator, about it-----back channel.
