Jim said (snip): >The discussions about measuring the effectiveness of paddles and the discussions about safety in bear country both bring to mind the thought that bears and humans are both highly complex beings that exist because...And both bears and humans have spirits. Humans operate paddles< Interesting post Jim -- as always sir. I'll add a quote: "Man is the only being that knows death; all others become old, but with a consciousness wholly limited to the moment, which must seem to them eternal. They see death, not knowing anything about it." Oswald Spengler, The Decline of the West, 1926 I used to operate a rifle and shot my fair share of BC's big game before finally trading it in for cash (a Ruger 7mm Magnum) in a direct effort to raise funds to purchase my present sea kayak. I then procured a camera, never looking back on my old hunting days (miss the friendships though). To down a bear, it was necessary to hit them in the shoulder at close range first. Now I shoot them with my camera at close range. Awareness in bear country, as in paddling on the water, is key. Jackie mentioned Eminem. She should hear me singing. I'm bad enough in church, where everyone backs away from me, let alone in the wilderness. Hopefully Ottawa won't try to register my voice as a weapon. Then there's Audrey Sutherland who claimed hitting a Brown Bear on the nose with a big stick was the answer. What a great lady paddler she was. Hmm, here's a quote, "walk loudly and carry a big stick." Oh, and Scott said (snip): >So, go out with all the conjecture you want, but know with certainty what exactly are you prepared to do when it's you that bear is after.< Scott, back posting? Hey, like your post but it needs Windows Media Player to play the tune, "Bad bears bad bears, what ya gonna do when they come for you, bad bears bad bears..." :-) Doug Lloyd(who wasn't going to post on this thread again after opening a can of worms the first time) Victoria BC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ "Whatever can be said at all can be said clearly and whatever cannot be said clearly should not be said at all."
