I just converted from a 1990 to a 2000 Civic and am
considering pitching the Yaks and bolting some tie-downs in
the gutters running along the roof (not rain gutters, but
channels in the roof (what are they for anyway?)), and using
notched foam blocks.

Anybody out there done this?

Thanks

I would try Yakima or Thule bars and towers (like A400) that need no
bolting. Works good for my no-rain-gutters car (which is not Honda). I
used a sleeping pad and rope tie-ups through the windows, but eventually
invested in a used Yakima saddles and rollers and have never regreted since
then. I din't know roof cross-section details for Civic, but some
rails/channels are too flimsy to put any stress on them. Besides, bolting
through the roof will decrease resale value of the car.
Alex.

FWIW:

One of my paddling partners just bought a Saris rack for his new Honda -
absolutely loves it - everything is automatically key-locked on when
mounted without buying additional locks - system goes on very quickly with
one person.
