Hello,
I have recently picked up a couple of recreational kayaks and will soon be
taking a trip halfway across the country. I have a Yakima setup on top of a
Suburban and I was wondering what others do for security. We'll be stopping
5 times between here (Illinois) and there (Washington) and I don't want to
try stuffing them in a hotel room with us. I was pondering using something
akin to a bike cable/chain to lock the seat mounts to the factory rack
(doesn't come off). Anyone tried this? Any other security measures I can take?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

D'oh! Looks like I unwittingly jumped into the middle of a discussion with
a question that started it. I can only plead ignorance as I just joined
the group and apologize for not checking recent archives. Sorry, I'll just
follow the subject at hand.

Thanks,
Ray

Live in or travel to places with lots of boats and an active market
for 'used' craft? You might want to invest in some scheme to slow
down would be predators and push them to look for an easier target.

Otherwise, I don't fret too much about it. I've gone cross country a
number of times, parked in ramps, motels, harbor/ferry terminal lots,
campgrounds, etc. Never a nibble. And I'll continue to not fret
right up until the point when my boat gets swiped.

That said, I do insure boats on a home policy rider for replacement
value. It covers many calamities beyond theft (getting caught in a hail
storm on the highway is a legit concern in my neck of the plains...),
and this is worth the cost (2-3 years of premiums = two loop locks).

The drunk or idiot opportunist who tries to steal you locked boat
and does a few hundred bucks in damage isn't covered by a lock
and cable, but is by a boat owner's policy.

plink plink.
