My better half & I are going to California for a weekend for a conference
but want to rent a couple of Kayaks.  Don't know anyone there.

John,

Back when I did the backband thing, I liked the Snap Dragon
(www.snapdragondesign.com) one with the stiff plastic like strap. The one
from Salamander (www.salamanderpaddlegear.com) is pretty good too. I've done
demo paddles in the Explorer and didn't notice any backband problems, so I
am not really sure changing the backband will solve the problem. Be sure to
sit up straight. Doing yoga will help a lot too.
