Sandy, My husband and I used the outrigger for several years with great success. We attached it to the bar futher out that Thule recommends and it stuck out far enough and still held the weight of the boat. It helps if you put a towel on the outrigger to enable the boat to slide easily - this could be especially useful if you want to rotate the boat to go onto the J rack. We bought a new vehicle (a Pathfinder) and had to switch to the roller-loader. It's great for loading into saddles. I wonder how it would work for the J rack if you attached it to the vehicle off-set from the rack. That way the boat would come up at an angle and you might be able to rotate it into position.
