It occurred to me as I was filtering water a couple days ago that I had had my
PUR Explorer water filter ten years and never replaced the cartridge, though it
still seems to work fine. Unfortunately, neither the Explorer nor its
replacement cartridges are available anymore. What currently available water
filters do people on Paddlewise recommend?

I like MSC Waterworks. You can field strip it.

I bought a Sweetwater (Guardian?) because I tried a friends and it was
incredibly easy to pump. It was also relatively inexpensive. I don't know
if it will get out every last bit of chemical stuff, but it seems to be
adequate for pumping lake and stream water on backpacking trips. The ease
of pumping has been mentioned in reviews of it I've seen. My old filter was
so hard to pump that it gave me tendonitis in my wrists. My daughter is the
designated water filterer (by choice) on our family backpacking expeditions,
so I wanted something that would be easy for her.
