On June 23rd, off the South end of Long Island AK, our group of four sea kayakers had a chance in counter with two kayakers from Vancouver B.C.: Todd Southerland & Claire Bond, both NOLS instructors. We were astonished to see other kayakers in an area devoid of all marine traffic. They were in the middle of a long trip from, I think, Sitka to Victoria B.C. ending in November. Claire and Todd were Ok and headed for the south end of Prince Of Wales IS. We were on the 5th day of a two week trip, tiring to get to the south end of Dall Island. We wanted to get around before bad weather swept in from the SW. They were going in the opposite direction, escaping the outside of Dall where they had been tied down by strong westerly winds for three days. Our group rounded Cape Muzon early the next morning, before the SW winds picked up. We spent two days in Security Cove before completing our trip to Craig AK.. Anyone have recent word from Claire and Todd? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
