"Arctic Dreams" by Barry Lopez is a fascinating source of information about
the Arctic and Arctic animals. It has an extended chapter about polar
bears. They are specifically adapted to swimming, and I'm not surprised
about the reported speed (6.2 mph) in the water. We gave the one we saw a
wide berth, since the naturalist we saw said "you can reason with a grizzly
bear, but to a polar bear, if it moves it's food."
