Hello Dee:
Here are some references for electric pump systems:
"Adding a Deck Mounted Switch to an Attwood" Nick Gill, at
http://www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/, use the google search engine to find this
article.
Laurie Ford's set up: http://members.iinet.net.au/~lford1/epumps.htm. Laurie
seems to prefer having the battery and switch in the cockpit.
Quite a few electric pump setups here use a Rule 500 gallon per hour pump, a
waterproof switch from a chain electronics store, and a gel cell battery of
between 2 and 7 amp hour capacity. Many set ups place the battery in the
back hatch, or day hatch, and keep it dry, rather than having it in the
cockpit. Secure the battery well, they are heavy. Use plenty of Sikaflex or
sealant around switches and wire holes. Secure all wiring away from being
dislodged by gear stuffing. Don't forget to provide a one way valve or plug
in the outlet, or water sneaks in, the Rule pump has no built in one-way
arrangement.
The best switch arrangement I have seen is shown at
www.nswseakayaker.asn.au/mag/49/recesseddeckswitches.htm .
As our club now has a web site, I will try at some future stage to describe
and photograph a typical system and post it on the web.
Cheers, PT.
