There've been discussions regarding making paddlers visible to power
boats & jetskis on this listserv, with the general impression that making
paddles more visible might not be the cure-all to the problem. Someone
from Wisconsin is offering a reflective tape specifically for paddlers.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if it as flashy but I use red/white reflective tape from the local
discount store or home center. I placed a wrap or two around the paddle
shaft near the blade - but not on the blade itself.

With mirrors or something as flashy as this would it be distracting or
annoying if you were paddling in a group - like a constant photo flash firing?

Hi all,

the photo's shown on the website look a bit fake, or at least "doctored" to
me. A proper reflector will be highly directional. An ordinary mirror will
only bouce back in a specific direction, and the usual "retro-reflective"
type only bounce light back in the direction of the incoming light. So only
if you are standing close to a lightsource you will see them light up.
I guess for the photo a brigh spotlight next to the camera (or a bright
flash) was used to show the effect.

I' myself have put some reflective tape I bought at a car supply shop on my
paddle blades, and from most angles it actually looks darker than the blades
themselves. Only if you shine a torch at them they are really bright. Still
I consider this a nice enhancement to my safety.

Kees

I wonder what the difference between their stuff and regular
Scotchlite is?

One thing I'd like to find out more about is the industrial
reflective coating offered by Krylon. It's clear, so it will not
change the color. The middle one at this page:

http://www.krylonindustrial.com/

It won't be better during the day (compared to a bright colour), but
it would increase night visibility if it's reasonably like Scotchlite
in performance.

Anyone know about the Krylon stuff?

Mike

All this talk about reflectors has got my gadget-happy brain working:

LED's are getting so cheap, I wouldn't be surprised to see a paddle with
a battery compartment in the shaft and LEDs along the spine of the
paddle. LED's can basically be encased in plastic by pouring the stuff
right over them, so they can be very effectively sealed from water...

Hey, the shaft could also have CO2 cartridges to power a very, very loud
whistle....

HMM!

Okay, trying to reel myself back in, now...

I teach kayaking to boy scouts. Have about 15 white water Kayaks,
helmets, spray skirts and paddles.

Have various helmets and paddles from different manufactureres - well
used equipment. Have to be able to tell our stuff from everyone else.

Marked the helmets and paddles with holographic tape. A strip on each
side of the helmet, 4 inches long above ear. A strip down each paddle
blade, both sides, 8 inches.

http://www.identi-tape.com/reflective.html (see Holographic Tape)

Ordered and the rolls were here two days later

So far it has stayed on fine. Except for one fiberglass paddle.
