At which point I would have to ask what the layup was.  I could see a
poorly layed up
chopped glass boat failing like that.

I own a kevlar canoe bought new in 1978, it has a skincoat finish - no
gel coat. 
It spent about 10 years on top of a car in a parking lot with no shelter
or cover. 
I used to paddle at lunch most days, so I took the boat to work everyday.

It's incredibly ugly and highly abused but it's still water tight. 
It's aptly named "The beater".
