G'Day Peter Treby & Paddlewise, Doesn't the water in a wave move in a circular motion so once in the wave if you put your paddle out towards the shore the water drags it down and if you put it into the direction of the oncoming wave it drags you up (sometimes). Don't really think its the boat movement particularly. The same effect should occur even if you weren't in a boat.
