I talked to someone at the Port Townsend symposium who knows Ed well and they thought he wanted to keep a low profile and focus on his teaching job and didn't give me any contact information (at least without first checking in with Ed). So Ed may contact me if he is willing to contact the person wanting the information. Let's leave it at that for awhile and see if anything happens. I also asked the question to a group of folks I was having dinner with and a couple of them said Reg Lake had done lots of coastal paddling down in Chile and was by far the most expert at paddling location in Chile that they knew. Coincidentally, I had once paddled in Florida with Reg (who then had a kayak shop in the Bay area) in about 1984 or 85. I was in charge of navigation and Reg was the photographer on a trip Aquaterra put on for introducing some of their dealers to the sport. I guess I did an okay job because everyone found there way back to the campsite each day in a maze of mangroves that would be easy to get lost in if you didn't constantly watch which channels you were in on the chart because they pretty much all looked alike. I was definitely worried that we were going to lose a few on the days folks paddled in pairs or threesomes. I'll pass contact information along back channel if and when I find the piece of paper I wrote contact information for Reg on. Well in two days I paddled 62 of the 70 or so kayaks on the beach that I hadn't paddled before. That gets me over three fourths of the way to my present goal of test paddling 1000 different single sea kayaks. At the present rate of new model introductions I should be there in five years or so. A lot of the padded backrests seemed to have too abrasive a heavy cloth in contact with my back. Maybe the heavy weave fabrics also held sand well too. Demo kayaks used at the Pt. Townsend symposium get pretty well covered in sand.
