You don't have to exit if you carry a slim paddlefloat under bungies in front of the kayak cockpit. A closed cell foam float measuring ( 3/4" + 3/4" sheet ) - - width = paddle blade + 4 - 6 inches - length paddle blade blade + 2- 4 inches fits under the bungies in front of my cockpit. My map also stores under the bungies on top of the float. If / when I capsize it's no big deal to yank the float from under the bungies - push the paddle blade in - move tha paddle out sideways and heave up.
