A liner helps keep the bag dry and reduces the need to wash/dry the bag. Stuff it in the tent, not on the dirt outside the tent. Don't try to stuff it in your home washing machine and dryer. Take it to a coin Laundromat that has the oversized washers. If it is dirty clean it. Packing it away dirty can cause damage or attract vermin. Often, the dirt can just be brushed off. Eating in your sleeping bag is bad for several reasons, even if you aren't in bear country. Spilled food on the bag can attract vermin who will chew a hole in your bag. Never store it in the stuff sack. Loose in a large cotton pillow case is recommended. Handle a wet bag very carefully. The added weight of the water can break the internal baffles and/or stitching. Particularly true of down bags, but also true of synthetics. I've been told that lubricating the zipper reduces potential tears from stuck zippers.
