Let me explain this way:
On Svalbard Archipelago (so called spitsbergen), between greenland and Franz
Josef Land, EVERY group or person leaving the habiat areas, ALWAYS carry a
huge caliber riflle. There is a policy for all Outdoor-Travellers do take
guns with them.
Svalbard ist Polar Bears Land and Polar Bars are on the top of the food
pyramid. For them, a human is only food, mayb interesting but nothing more.

But better is, not to let the bears come near your tnet or what else. Take
some loud exploding stuff to scare the bears. Don4t try to run away, they4re
faster. Learn to imitate a bear, b huge, don4t scared, loud and if nothing
works, make sure you4re good with the rifle, you wouldn4t get a second
chance.

There so many stories about contacts with polar bears. Everything had
happened yet.

All the best
