I think that is a important plus to learn roll with closed eyes or with a pretty poor visibility underwater, but just like a safety factor. I personally enjoy pretty much to be underwater (obviously in controlled conditions), I love the sun reflections under the water, I love to see the bottom of the water when I do "stern rolls" in clear water (http://community.webshots.com/album/85737883awyZdN) , I love to see just my hands out of the water in the beginning of my "sweep roll"... In fact, in my personal case, to feel myself comfortable underwater help me very much when I am trying to refine maneuvers and to me that means "open eyes". In white water you don't want to be much time underwater "enjoying" with your head near rocks and sticks, or in the surf zone, or in rough seas, I know it, what I am trying to tell is... "To be comfortable underwater will definitely help you to improve your skills, enjoy the ocean with open eyes every time you can, and roll fast and with your eyes closed when is necessary " Juan Luis Del Valle http://www.mayanseas.com *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
