I don't see these 2-piece greenland paddles around any longer, and the dealer
that used to sell them here in Vancouver, sells now "Nimbus Greenland" 2-piece
paddles (about the same price - $US 200). The previous one, Feathercraft
Klatwa, has received a lot of good feedbacks, but I don't know about this
Nimbus (or is it the same? Feathercraft company never made any paddles
actually - only put their name on them).

Alex.

G'Day Alex and Paddlewise,

Talking of Feathercraft labelled Klatwa's - I took delivery of my Kahuna
yesterday - can anyone tell me a good way to fit a spare paddle on to the
Kahuna and would a Klatwa be one of the better paddles to use on this boat?
(you can still buy them in Australia).

All the best, PeterO

I haven't figured out a reliable outside place for a spare paddle. Since
cargo room in Feathercraft is accessible from inside the cockpit, I don't
see any problem keeping 2-piece paddle inside, either fore or aft. Klatwa
is a Greenland paddle, and I don't know another 2-piece Greenland, so I
don't think there is much choice. That "Nimbus Greenland" can be the same
Klatwa, I should better stop at the shop when driving by, and have a look
and talk to them. Btw, I see that Klatwa is still listed on-line in Seattle
shop http://www.foldingkayak.com/ for USD 215.

Cricket has a 2-piece (they call it a take-apart) Greenland paddle.
http://www.cricketdesigns.com/greenland.htm

I own several Betsie Bay Greenland paddles which I like a lot, but the
take-apart ones aren't very easy to take apart. In fact I often find it
nearly impossible to take it apart, even on dry land with lots of
leverage. So as much as I like these paddles, I can't recommend the
take-apart ones. But mine are about 7 years old, so maybe they're not
like that any more. And anyway I'm not sure that they build them except
by custom request.

If ferrules are metal, they should be the ones to be to blamed for this
problem. A sort of corrosion or etching gets them anyway. I don't have any
problems taking apart fiberglass paddles - actually I do, but only with
blades joints, not with the middle joint (this is a 4-piece Aquabound - I
wanted it to be totally portable :-). Difficulties with blades in my
4-piece are caused by very tight joint, with very little tolerance - to
prevent leaking;

The ferrules are not metal. They're fiberglass (yes, on a wooden
paddle). It's not a corrosion problem; it's just an extremely tight fit.

G'day Alex,
I really like the Kahuna sea sock and haven't had too much problem (one
days experience) undoing it on the water to access gear and food. It may be
possible to do the same with the spare paddle - I'll give it a go and if its
too awkward will move on to the paddle sock idea - they are very popular
over here.

Anyway thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

All the best, PeterO
