A gun is like your kayak or your cello. How good are you without
practice? A gun is only as good as your practice and your mind will
allow. But, if you _never_ intend to kill anything, trap, skeet, or
sporting clays are all fun ways to stay proficient with a shotgun.

If practice doesn't sound like fun, stick to pepper spray. I've also
heard recommendations to periodically test your pepper spray. No, not
that way! Wait for a moderately windy day, and make a quick blast
downwind--you will get an idea and reminder of its range and also know
that the spray hasn't "gelled" up inside or gotten old.
