A little bit offtopic, but just to share some fresh bad news (too much for
me alone).  This topic has reminded me of my purchased Alaska Air ticket for
this 2003 December.
Bad news: for US-Canada Alaska Air flights (I think for US-domestic as well)
bag weight limit as of October 1 2003 is 50 lbs per bag, maximum 2
checked-in bags.  Hardly possible even with my Feathercraft Kahuna (45 lbs
with backpack and rudder, but consider paddles, PFD and expedition gear).
Extra charge is (according to press release) $25 per bag from 50 to 70 lbs,
and $50 from 70 to 100 lbs.
I can understand them - Alaska residents bring in a lot of things that are
cheaper in contiguous USA, but what in the hell other destinations have to
do with that?...

So, - be prepared to pay extra for your next flight to wherever it will be,
and whatever airline you will use.
