BTW, the last time I was on board the USS Constitution in Boston, it
looked pretty much "perfect". However, there are only a few board
feet of wood in that ship that are original. Essentially, the whole
vessel has been rebuilt several times over since it was first
constructed.

If you ever visit the Constellation in Baltimore, don't believe the story
that it is the original ship. The original, a President-class frigate, was
basically scrapped in the mid-19th century and rebuilt as a corvette. Only
a small part of the original ship was used in the new ship, mainly to
preserve the fiction that the old Constellation was simply being
modernized, to get around a Congressional prohibition against new
construction.
