I understand that it's very interesting and might make an excellent day trip
from eastern PA.

--Certainly is. The rivers there are classed as Brown Water (bw) rather
than Flat water (fw) because there is usually an active flow with many
twists and turns, so your maneuvering and river reading skills are
emphasized. Usually a lot of strainers too. Sea kayaks don't work too
well, recreational kayaks are about the right length. Whitewater boats are
generally workable here.
Check out Ed Gertler's Garden State canoeing or Robert Parnes' Canoeing
the Pine Barrens. Both have come out recently in newer editions. Mohawk
Canoe Club and Philadelphia CC have a lot of these rivers on their
schedules. Also Lehigh Valley Canoe Club.
Most popular are the Wading River, Cedar Creek, Mullica, Batsto, Great Egg
Harbor and the Maurice. Lots of liveries in the area, so solo trips might
be arranged. Mohawk will have its annual New Years Day trip on Cedar
Creek...
