There's a nice low blowing through tonight, with seas to 9 meters. I noticed
our local Fat Bast...ds club called off their Muir Creek to Port Renfrew
trip today. That would have been a rather interesting outing to say the
least.

I was talking to an acquaintance the other week who was up-island paddling
in early October, when we had the intense 940 Millibar low. He was at
Tofino. An 18 meter swell was running that afternoon, with winds over 90
knots further up island. The locals said they hadn't seen it that big in
eons. The web cam showed the bay closed completely out, just walls of white
water. My friend said the foam zone (the bubbling froth steeped up along the
foreshore) was an unheard of 5 meters high (15 feet). I wonder what it would
be like to paddle in that. No one was surfing that day. He got out that week
though, in both his river boat and his sea yak. I think it was a rather
unforgettable week of solo paddling for him I take it (he is highly
skilled).

I wish I could have been there to see that! Was that 18 meters recorded at
a buoy or was it an observation from one of the lighthouses?

Mike, et al:
That was what my friend said the buoys were reading. I didn't get
confirmation of my own. The individual in question isn't know to exaggerate
(a huge problem/issue in the paddling community, listservers, etc. - I know,
as I follow-up on stories for Sea Kayaker Magazine, so have to check out
details and confirm observations, etc). I was simply reporting what he said.
I well imagine the swell was high. I had a friend out that way a week or two
ago, he said there was a lot of new debris registering rather high up,
crammed into in various crevices and cracks.
