Chances are, Andree's stump was not made by one of Lucky Jack Aubrey's buddies, but by a hand logger, sometime in the last 80 years or so.  

This was a legal activity, and apparently fairly ecologically benign.  It was done by cutting down a tree fairly close to shore, then dragging it into the water with a smallish power boat (usually 30-40 ft long). They only took the biggest, most valuable trees, and didn't destroy all the others to get to them.  If you look, there is evidence of this activity everywhere on the BC coast.  But you have to look closely!
