Patrick: Good point. I still think that this might be a viable alternative in calm waters where you don't have to worry about your boat drifting away. Years ago in my youth I took lifeguard traing at summer camp. The final test was to rescue someone in a realistic practice. The definition of realistic in this case was that the person being rescued would act as a panicked person would grab and latch on to anything floating, especially any potential rescuer. Since I was about 11 at the time and the person I was practicing on was about 18 he was considerable stronger and bigger than me. When I did my first attempt at rescuing him he jumped on me and held me in a bear hug fashion, since I couldn't swim with him mauling me we both started to drown. We discussed this afterward and what I learned is that drowning people latch on to things that are floating. Simply sink and they will let go.
