Gordin posted (snip): >>Last weekend the Coho (the ferry between Port Angeles and Victoria) interrupted its routine crossing to start a search for an over turned boat. The boat turned out to be a kayak which they believe may have blown off some ones dock or beach. The kayak was recovered from just about the middle of the straight. There may be no way of knowing where it came from.<<< The cockpit cover idea is a good one, other than the obvious one of tethering/securing your kayak to the dock/foreshore/whatever. This issue has come up before on both PW and for that matter, with the rescue authorities. One expensive search a few years ago off the Sun Shine Coast could have been partially prevented with the "lost" kayak simply having a little bit of identification in it. Not that hard to do, unless you don't want anyone knowing it's your kayak. Which bring up another issue...maybe there's a dead kayaker drug-runner still floating out there. Not too sure if I should be potentially sad or not.
