Does anyone know about (or know of a source of information) concerning the
several fatalities that occurred near Punta Pulpita (south of Mulege) during
an Outward Bound trip back in, I believe, 1978? I can't seem to find
anything about it searching on the web.

We heard some of the details, of this ill fated trip. As I recall there is
a write-up in the Baja Adventure book. I read about it in one of the Baja
books hopefully my memory is correct. Our trip leader seemed to know a fair
amount of the details. That can be a rough section of water and I think
they were blown out into the sea of Cortez. -- MZ

Trudi Angell of Paddling South, or NOLS, might have some information. I
was leading 10 self-supported trips there in the late eighties and it
was a big deal; I met one of the locals who went out for the rescue and he
was very affected by it.

I had to see the area before leading trips there so I did a three day
solo around the point. I was winded in a few times with 10 - 12
person groups between Punta Antonio
and Punta Pulpita (or Pulpito? if you say it wrong it means baby octopus
instead of pulpit so locals laugh) and it's knarly. Lots of
clapitus in every direction and a reef in the middle to boot. If a norte
came up we would land and then stand in the water to help the clients
while guiding them with hand signals.

Actually, I love thinking about that solo - first I couldn't find my water
bottle at the ranch and someone said "Andrea, so cabesa es en une otre
monde (spelling?) - your head is in another world!" (I think my friends
would say that is true).

I set off in my Dawn Treader by Derek Hutchinson (which is grey on top,
white on bottom) and immediately a weird and unusual fog came in. I
paddled in a halo-like rainbow about two feet from shore until I rounded
Antonio. Then the fog cleared, blue footed boobies flew over me while
three dolphins swam next to me (I've always thought the boat looked like
a marine mammal!). I camped in the bay and paddled south to see if Trudi
was there with a group and she rewarded me with an extra lobster given to
her by a local fisherman. So I paddled back and over-cooked it.

The next night I stayed at a fish camp and saw no one, but in the
morning, after I had paddled off, I turned around to look at the beach
and there was someone on horseback, like an aparition. (sp?)

Anyway, it was very cool.
