I had the honor of rounding this point as a NOLS student in Fall 1999. Our instructors told us about the accident and that we would only attempt to round it in perfect conditions. Since we were hoping for a rest day on the other side of the point, we all had our fingers crossed. I remember getting up that morning hours before dawn for our weather check. We packed and were on the water just before 6AM. It was an intense experience paddling through 3-foot seas with the jagged point rising menacingly and majestically into the clear sky. We landed on the smooth beach on the south side and made camp safe and sound. My NOLS class taught me many things, but the lessons of respect for the sea I learned on that day will be with me forever.
