A couple of decades ago I spent a lot of time kayaking out of Tofino to Hot springs Cove and points north of that. I met an old fella one day near HSC that told me about a tidal wave that swept through his squatters cabin. He had subsequently moved back to town, then later in life, back to the wild, but on higher ground (I'd stopped in to report my surf helmet had washed off the deck and gone missing off a reef close by, and I had wanted to ensure no one called the rescue authorities if the helmet was seen floating around). I told him a few of my own tall tales (ones that were actually true, including a cross-wise hang-up in a surge channel north of his location). He looked like he didn't accept my reports candidly. And I'd always figured his story was a tall tale, as I thought only Port Alberni got any Tsunami action in the 60's, due to the oscillation down the long inlet. I recently bumped into this site which lends credence to the old guys story. http://www.pep.bc.ca/hazard_preparedness/zeballos_64/tidalwave.html Hope everyone's new year is going well, even Scott's :-) You guys all rock!
