I am following the discussion about that race closely. Some of the
expeditions I am participating in require a rescue insurance. Perhaps
that should be done, require someone who organizes a high-risk race like
this, to buy an insurance or require the participants to have one!
Now here is my question: Did you read the Seakayaker magazine from December
2003? There were instructions to build a solar battery charger for the
kayak deck. I am a pphysics teacher in a pre-engineering High School
Program. I would like to do this activity as a project in class. The
materials are forbidding expensive. So I had the idea, perhaps some here
at the list would be interested to have one of these solar-battery-chargers
build. It would be for the materials, shippng and a nice lunch for the
kids (11th and 12th graders). I hope, it is not against the rules to ask
this question here on the list! If, then I apologize. Otherwise, if you
are interested, please contact me back channel!

I don't feel it's against list rules. You're helping your students
with an experiment by creating paddling gear for those on the list. You
aren't looking to make money, just getting help to get the project to
happen.

You may even coax one or more of the students out into a boat ;-)

Those who disagree are welcome to discuss this with me backchannel.
