I've seen a couple skin boats which used a two-part urethane coating to seal
and toughen the fabric skin.

Anybody got a link to such materials?

Thanks.

Bill Low of Willow Kayaks uses Gaco AU 7000 on his boats
(http://www.willowkayaks.com).
It's a nice coating, but very toxic. http://www.gaco.com,
Gaco has a boat repair page off of the main site but all of the links are
broken.

Corey Freedman of Spirit Line uses some custom goop, it isn't nearly as
toxic as
the Gaco. You may be able to get some directly from him if you can get
to his shop in
Anacortes WA. There are some pictures of his boats, coated, at
http://www.skinboats.com/tradition.html Others have asked Freedman to
ship the goop
with no success...

Kirk,

I can't find AU 7000, or any variant (such as UA 7000) on the gaco site. Any
clues?

Thanks.

It appears to be marketed as "Crystal Deck"

>From http://www.gaco.com/02aps_09pd_int.html -

"Special designs can be created and protected with the latest Gaco
Western system, Crystal Deck UA-7000, our state-of-the-art aliphatic
urethane. This 70% solids, crystal clear coating is non-yellowing,
extremely strong and wear-resistant."

It's definitely wear resistant.

So what are you coating ;-)

Too much of a choice now. I wonder which one would be better for small
repairs (not covering the whole skin)? I just have finished fixing small
nicks on Uretahne skin along the keelsen, using Aquaseal (mostly on
reinforcing Urethane strip - too early for replacing the whole strip).
Perhaps a single-use repair - if I hit some sharp rock exactly at this fixed
spot, this will be it for Aquaseal.
