People _do_not_ usually have the right information to make such decisions and rarely make them based on anything resembling logic. That's what makes transportation engineering such a difficult field - too many politicians, lobbyists, and uninformed voters. Believe me, the intricacies of the why and how of the auto industry are very well studied.
